‘Snow Leopard’ Angrita Sherpa passed away at 72

KATHMANDU: Angrita Sherpa has passed away this morning at the age of 72 at his residence in Jorpati, Kathmandu .
Terrestrial body of the late Angrita Sherpa is being prepared to be taken to the Sherpa Monastery and cremated according to Buddhism on Wednesday, said Chhetu Sherpa, general secretary of the Pasang Lhamu Foundation.
He had climbed not only the highest peak but also Mount K2 in Pakistan without oxygen and dozens of mountains in Nepal including Choyu, Manaslu, Lhotse, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
He started climbing Mt. Everest in 1983. It was Sherpa’s last ascent of Mount Everest in 1996 without oxygen. He was nicknamed the “Snow Leopard” for his record of successfully climbing Mt. Everest 10 times without oxygen.
Born in 1948 in Thame, Solukhumbu, Angrita’s main occupation was yak farming, but he started climbing at the age of 15. Sherpa, who first climbed Choyu Mountain at the age of 20, first climbed Mount Everest in 1983 without oxygen.
